David Jones

Biography

David Jones has emerged from the gulf coast of Alabama with a fresh new approach in the world of jazz. Simply classified as “soul jazz” this unique sound brings together the sounds of R & B and soul that he grew up with and combines it with the smooth jazz vibe that he fell in love with over 20 years ago.

David began singing and playing trumpet at 12 years old and quickly became known for his musical talents in his hometown of Fairfield, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham. After high school he accepted a music scholarship to Walker Junior College and then moved on to the University of Montevallo. After leaving college he traveled with His Ambassadors out of Burlington, New Jersey and after one tour with His Am’s he played contemporary Christian music for the next 5 years, recording one album with Cornerstone Band out of Birmingham, Alabama.

David received a B.S. in Education from The University of Alabama at Birmingham and started his teaching and coaching career in 1986. Being heavily involved in teaching and coaching caused a hiatus from the trumpet but he continued to sing in the church, as he had done his entire life.

During a stint as head basketball coach at The Montgomery Academy in Montgomery, Alabama that began in 1993, he discovered radio station WVAS 90.7, the campus radio station for Alabama State University in Montgomery. He fell in love with the smooth contemporary sounds being played on WVAS and began to pay special attention to the vibe, structure and feel of contemporary smooth jazz.

In 1999 David settled on the gulf coast in Gulf Shores, Alabama where he continued to teach and coach. In 2012, after a 2 year stint as worship leader at First Baptist Church of Loxley, Alabama, David made the decision to begin playing “soul jazz” exclusively. He began by playing one man band gigs along the gulf coast and still plays those today.

After 30 years away from writing music David sat back down at the piano and wrote eight of the ten tunes on his debut soul jazz cd “Beautiful Music”. The cd received rave reviews and is now available on itunes, cdbaby and Amazon. The first two singles released, “Let The Players Play” and “Sugar Babies” have both spent time on the smooth jazz charts, the music is being played nationwide and is also very popular in the UK.
